Dempsey: “We had three goals”
By ASN Staff • Jun 20th, 2010 • Category: FeaturesASN snagged this exclusive and, it turns out unauthorized*, interview with Clint Dempsey in the “mixed zone” at Ellis Park Stadium immediately following the U.S. Men’s National Team’s 2-2 draw with Slovenia on Friday. In it, Dempsey expresses his bewilderment with the phantom foul call on what would have been the Yanks’ winning goal, among other things.
*We were informed in no uncertain terms by the FIFA person in charge that mixed zone was for written press to do written stories only. There is a separate room where players do TV interviews that ASN, as an accredited written media outlet was not permitted access to. Therefore it was very important that written press, ASN included, honor FIFA’s rules on this matter. To drive her point home, the FIFA person in charge followed the ASN reporter until he was about to leave the premise and scolded him anew. We promise that this dogged enforcement of FIFA policies played absolutely no role in our decision to post this video, or the one of Carlos Bocanegra, both of which can also be viewed on our YouTube page. Though we would like to point out that the FIFA Gestapo officer in question was not South African and had no affiliation with local authorities, who have been nothing but pleasant even when we were (unknowingly) breaking FIFA ordinances. For the record, ASN has shot mixed zone videos at other FIFA events without so much as a dirty look from officials in charge.
