World Cup 2010: Who goes, who stays?

By ASN Staff • Apr 29th, 2010 • Category: Features

It’s getting close to crunch time. U.S. men’s national team head coach Bob Bradley is required to submit a list of 30 names to FIFA by May 11, with the final 23-man roster due May 30. Apparently, he will only call 26 players into camp though.

ASN has been holding a preliminary poll on a long list of names that we will now try to pare down to 30 names or fewer.

Unfortunately, it isn’t easy. The situation has become even more muddled with injuries (Stuart Holden, Ricardo Clark, Brian Ching) and scoring binges (Herculez Gomez, Edson Buddle–neither of whom even made our preliminary list). But we can reasonably assume that the following players can expect to be named to the 30-man roster:

  • Landon Donovan
  • Tim Howard
  • Carlos Bocanegra
  • Oguchi Onyewu
  • Michael Bradley
  • Jozy Altidore
  • Clint Dempsey
  • Ricardo Clark
  • Benny Feilhaber
  • Steve Cherundolo
  • Jonathan Spector
  • Jay DeMerit

Additionally, one has to believe Charlie Davies and Stuart Holden have spots waiting for them should they be fit (which both may in fact be).

So that’s 14 names, or up to four short of the 16-18 Bradley said were already decided, according to the Washington Post.

What about the others? That’s where you, the fan, come in. Below are listed a number of names, in rough order of votes they received in our first poll (fear not: Buddle and Gomez are added at the bottom). Vote “Yay” if you want the player in the squad. “Nay” if you don’t. From this we should get a good idea what USMNT fans want! So get to it!

Update: With Brian Ching due back from injury, we have added him to the list below

  1. FRIEDEL!!!!!!!!

  2. Bradley must select speed, height, and those in form. To that end, Edson Buddle, a youth national team player, should be promoted and given a spot.

  3. [...] has been polling its readers on who they want included in the squad. These polls, which follow below, will remain open until [...]

  4. Guzan should be in the first group, Ricardo Clark and Feilhaber should drop to the second.

Torres, Edu and Beasley are shoe-ins for the 23. Unfortunately I am sure Bornstein is in that group too.

Buddle, with his recent exploits, has to make the 23 given how desperate we are for goal scorers. Goodson is a pretty sure bet to make the 23 as well.

Bedoya, not mentioned above, will be in the 30 and could be a surprise inclusion into the 23.
